Celebrating Classic Motoring And Goodwood

Behind The Illustrations | An Interview With Tim Godden

A picture speaks a thousand words, and on our limited-edition Goodwood inspired t-shirts, commissioned by illustrator Tim Godden, you will see a trio of designs playing homage to the magic of The Goodwood Revival.

We caught up with Tim to discuss inspiration behind the prints, road trips and classic motorsports (it seemed fitting).

Tell us about your Revival inspired designs:

For me PWVC is a quintessentially British brand and Goodwood is a quintessentially British event, I wanted the cars used in the designs to reflect this partnership. I think two of the car marques used, Bentley and Jaguar, are synonymous with British motorsport and its heritage, so they were fairly obvious inclusions.

The third of the designs shows another great British car marque, but one that maybe the larger public don’t necessarily think of when considering motorsport; Austin. I really wanted to include an Austin Ulster Special in the set of designs as it is a special car to me.

My father and I have been visiting classic motorsport events for many, many years and the Austin Ulsters have always been a car we’ve looked out for. There is something that seemed more approachable about the Austins, and I think also that the donor Austin 7 had been my grandfather’s favourite car, played a factor in that. Aside from that they also had such great racing pedigree at places like Brooklands and are still such fun to see in action. Probably for that reason I’d say this is my favourite design – but I like them all, of course!

What are your thoughts on what makes Goodwood so special?

I’m not sure there is one thing that makes Goodwood so special, but the bringing together of so many elements in one place. The setting, the cars, the heritage, the enthusiasm, there is so much that makes it magical. Personally, this collaboration has felt so natural. Classic car racing and artwork have all been a part of most of my life, so do be able to contribute to a part of that story is really special. It’s great to know that others out there who enjoy the same things will now be wearing my designs at Goodwood and other meets around Britain and maybe even the world. It’s cool to think that some of PWVC’s style ambassadors might be seen wearing them around and about, too.

What’s your dream classic car and where would your first road trip be in it?

If I was going to pick a my dream classic my Dad has just given me a 1963 Belgian-built Citroen 2CV AZL to restore, so I would have to say that...particularly when it’s finished! For a first trip, in my mind it is over to France to watch a few stages of the Tour de France. Though, really, there’s a long way to go on the restoration so my first road trip is likely to be a much more mundane, but thoroughly rewarding, journey to the end of the drive and back! Either way, how ever many trips come before it, I’d love to take it over to see the tour one day.

Do you have a life motto or words of wisdom?

I don’t really have a life motto, but I do think you should do the things in life that make you happy. Sometimes that isn’t always the easiest, safest or most comfortable option, but it’s certainly better in the long run.
