Epaulettes

An ornamental shoulder piece found on an item of clothing, commonly on coats or jackets of a military uniform.

G

Gauge

The term used for the number of needles per inch on a knitting machine: this determines the weight of the fabric. For example, the higher the gauge, the finer the knitwear will be. Modern machinery no longer uses Dzgaugedz, and refers to needle size. The most common gauges are: 30G Super fine; 21G Fine; 15G Medium; 9G Heavy; 3G Chunky

H

Hanger Loop

A loop made of outer material, attached to an item of clothing in order to offer a way of hanging the garment without a hanger.

I

Inset Sleeve

or a 'set-in' sleeve is probably the most common type of sleeve found on garments. The sleeve is a separate piece that is sewn to the bodice at an armhole that meets at the outer edge of the shoulder. This style of sleeve gives a more professional, formal and possibly natural look.

J

Jet Pockets

The jetted flap pocket is standard for hip pockets, with a small strip of fabric taping the top and bottom of the slit for the pocket. It has a lined flap of matching fabric covering the top of the pocket, sewn in along the seam of the jetting. This flap was initially created to protect the contents of the pocket from any rain.

Jersey

L

Lapped Seams

Linen

Is a textile made from the fibres of the flax plant. The fibre is very absorbent and garments made of linen are valued for their exceptional coolness and freshness in hot weather.

Loro Piana Storm System

A Loro Piana fabric that consists of a double barrier: the water-repellent Rain System that ensures that drops of water slide on the surface of the fabric, and the exclusive hydrophilic membrane that is resistant to water, windproof and allows the skin to breathe.

M

Merino

The Merino fabric originates from an economically influential breed of sheep prized for its wool. Merino wool is finely crimped and soft.

Moleskin

Moleskin is a heavy cotton fabric, woven and then sheared to create a short, soft pile on one side. In feel and appearance its nap is similar to felt or chamois, but less plush than velour. The word is also used for clothing made from this fabric.

Mother-of-pearl

A smooth shining iridescent substance forming the inner layer of the shell of some molluscs, especially oysters and abalones, can be used to create buttons.

N

Nylon

Nylon is a polymer, a plastic with super-long, heavy molecules built up of short, endlessly repeating sections of atoms, just like a heavy metal chain is made of ever-repeating links.

P

Patch Pockets

The patch pocket is sewn on the outside of the garment rather than sewn between the shell and the lining. The shape and size of the patch pocket can vary greatly.

Pique Cotton

Pique refers to a weaving style, normally used with cotton yarn, which is characterized by raised parallel cords or fine ribbing. It creates a fine textured surface that appears similar to a waffle weave. Commonly used for polo shirts.

Placket

An opening or slit in a garment, covering fastenings or for access to a pocket, or the flap of fabric under such an opening.

R

Raglan Sleeve

A raglan sleeve is a type of sleeve whose distinguishing characteristic is to extend in one piece fully to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam from underarm to collarbone giving the garment a relatively undefined look.

Removable Central Placket

A central placket is a piece of fabric that can be either sewn in or be removed. It adds space and more room to a garment. An example of this is the removable placket found on the twin track.

S

Seersucker

A lightweight fabric with a crimped or puckered surface.

Seam Sealed

Where a garment has been given additional waterproofing qualities by using sealing tape to seal any seams. For example, the Private White V.C. SB Unlined 2.0 is a Ventile® jacket that has been seam sealed in our factory using copper sealing tape.

Suede

Is a type of leather with a napped finish commonly used for jackets, shoes and leather goods. It has a very soft finish and is commonly considered more luxurious than leather.

T

Tin Cloth

A thick cotton canvas that's milled by century-old mills in Scotland, Tin Cloth is coated in a proprietary oil-finish wax.

Two-way Zip

Outerwear jackets and cardigans can close with a two-way zipper. The two-way zipper, with two pulls, allows the wearer to keep the garment zipped while leaving the lower portion open.

V

Ventile®

Ventile®, originally invented at the Shirley Institute in Manchester during WWII, is densely woven from 100% cotton using the worldǯs finest long staple fibre. Ventile® is not coated or laminated yet the combination of the dense weave and the swelling properties of the fibres when wet provide excellent weatherproofing. It is an entirely natural product that offers a unique level of comfort, look and feel as well as being windproof, highly breathable and extremely durable.

Viscose

Viscose rayon fibre is a soft fibre commonly used in linings.

W

Wet Wax

It is a cotton jacket made water-resistant by a paraffin-based waxing the item. Wet Wax essentially means it has a wet finish to the product as opposed to dry wax finish.

Y

Qualities

Learn more about the exquisite materials your Private White V.C. garment is handcrafted from:

Qualities - Brushed Cotton

Brushed cotton

Our brushed cotton range carries all the properties of regular cotton, yet the process of brushing the fabric removes excess lint and fibres to create an exquisite super soft handle.

Cashmere

Cashmere

A luxurious, fine and super soft yarn, cashmere comes from the Cashmere Goat, with rigorous standards in its classification. Despite its finer handle than that of standard sheep wool, Cashmere is up to three times more insulating, rendering it incomparably superior. Our Cashmere range spans exquisite 100% cashmere products, to cashmere and cotton blends ideal for a luxurious, fine gauge garment.

Qualities - Gift wrapping

Complimentary Gift wrapping & Delivery

Your Private White V.C. parcel is complimentary gift wrapped and finished with our signature copper coloured ribbon before being shipped in our 100% recyclable branded boxes. We offer complimentary shipping across the UK and Internationally on orders over £150. Our partners at DPD and FedEx ensure safe and convenient delivery of your parcel, with 90% of our UK parcels delivered next working day, free of charge.

Qualities - Seam sealing

Copper coloured seam sealing

We pride ourselves on creating practical garments, many of which are waterproof; however, once a needle has passed through fabric (for example, to join pattern pieces at the seams) it cannot be fully waterproof. For this reason, in many of our garments; particularly those that are crafted from Ventile®; we seal all the seams with our signature copper coloured tape. This closes any stitch holes and ensures a fully sealed, water and wind proof garment that will keep you warm and dry.

Sanders

Corduroy

Durable, soft and warm, corduroy refers to the structure of the fabric in question; often cotton. Usually a heavyweight yet breathable fabric, our corduroy is super soft and hard wearing. Kasia to confirm.

Cotton

Cotton

Our 100% cotton collection exudes comfort and style. A cool, breathable fabric with hypo allergenic properties, our cotton is exclusively woven in the UK, meaning we can trace many of our garments all the way back to their fibres.

Qualities - Double Faced Cashmere

Double Faced Cashmere

Exclusive to Private White V.C., our luxurious double-faced Cashmere and Lambswool blend offers an exceptionally soft handle and unrivalled comfort and warmth. In beautiful charcoal or navy colourways, the reverse of the cloth showcases our exclusively designed regimental blanket stripe, a commemorative WWI design, touching on the roots and history of our company and celebrating our namesake Private Jack White V.C.

Sanders

Flannel

Flannel is similar to brushed cotton in that the finished garment is brushed to create a super soft handle. In comparison, flannel is not exclusively cotton and refers more to the type of weave.

Sanders

Goat Suede

Derived in a similar way to standard leather, our luxurious Goat Suede is taken from the underside of the animal, which is then napped and buffed to acquire its exquisite buttery soft texture. Our Suede skins are sourced ethically and responsibly, with full visibility of our supply chain.

Qualities - Grandad collar

Grandad Collar

Thought to originate from workers in the 1900s, the grandad collar is simple a casual shirt style with little to no collar structure; simply a button at the throat. History dictates that factory workers did not wear a tie for fear of catching it in the machinery, therefore rendering the collar unnecessary. Fast forward to the 1950s and this style became a casual staple in every gentlemans wardrobe. Worn today in an effortlessly casual manner, our light and breezy Grandad shirts are a bestseller.

Qualities - Handcrafted

Handcrafted

Every stage of our production process is carried out lovingly, by hand and we estimate each garment passes an extraordinary total of twenty-two highly skilled hands during its construction cycle. Only the finest, skilled craftsman are employed to create the our authentic Private White V.C. garments and they do so with extraordinary attention to detail. Original machinery and tools take centre stage in our Manchester factory, with equipment such as the Manchester-made T.Walker & Co. cutting machine, dating back to the 1950s, still playing a vital role in the manufacturing process. Our craftsmen and women cut our patterns by hand, before sewing the pieces of your garment together on individual sewing machines. This work can only be carried out to our standard by highly skilled workers, who construct your garments paying attention to the finest details; a feat that modern day machinery simply cannot replicate.

Sanders

Herringbone Knit

Often found in twill products, Herringbone is the distinctive V-shaped pattern created by a specific weaving process. Often used in tailoring and accessories, Herringbone styles are classic, simple and easy to wear.

Qualities - Jersey

Jersey

Keeping our British made values at heart, our 100% cotton jersey range for AW17 is spun right here in the UK, commissioned to our trusted local partners in Lancashire and Leicestershire, before being knitted into the luxuriously soft jersey fabric you have come to expect from Private White V.C.

Qualities - Brushed knit

Knit gauge

The gauge of a garment refers to the number of needles per inch; this determines the finished weight of the fabric. Simply put, the higher the gauge, the finer the garment will be. Common gauges include: 30G Super fine; 21G Fine; 15G Medium; 9G Heavy; 3G Chunky

Qualities - Lambswool

Lambswool

Lambswool is the highest quality sheep's wool available; the lambs very first shear produces a much finer, shorter wool that does not require a high level of processing. Super soft and never prickly, lambswool offers elasticity, whilst offering more insulation and water resistance then your standard wool fibre.

Sanders

Linings

We use only 100% natural body linings, consisting of either super soft and warm brushed cotton, or luxurious cotton sateen. Our sleeve linings are often acetate, a silky fibre offering ease of movement and ultimate comfort.

Sanders

Linen

Crafted from 100% natural fibres from the flax plant, linen is one of the most breathable, coolest and strongest fabrics available. Lightweight and absorbent, our linen keeps the wearer cool and comfortable in warmer climes, offering twice the strength of cotton for a durable, hard wearing garment.

Sanders

Loopback Cotton

Deriving its name from the traditional machine used to knit this fabric The Loopwheel, this knit features tiny loops on the underside of the fabric. This characteristic increases the surface area of the fabric, keeping the body cool by allowing the absorption of water; creating a breathable fabric. In cooler weather, the knit offers insulation by trapping pockets of air between the garment and body.

Made in Manchester buttons

Our Made in Manchester studs are exclusively created for Private White V.C., featuring the Victoria Cross symbol. A nod to our heritage and our hometown, these buttons symbolise the very essence of a legitimate Private White V.C. garment.

Qualities - Made to Measure

Made to Measure

Our exclusive made to measure service is designed to tailor to your every need; from altering sleeve, hem and leg lengths, to choosing new fabrics entirely, and whats more; it all happens right here in Manchester under our factory roof.

With the most passionate and skilled craftsmen honouring over 30 years experience in the industry, we are able to create a range of beautifully detailed garments made to your required measurements, whether that is creating a bespoke garment or simply altering the length of a trouser leg. You can read more about our made to measure service here.

Sanders

Merino

The Wool taken from the Merino sheep is regarded as one of the finest – and softest – of any sheep. Humans are intelligent, but nature far more so; the Merino sheep can be found across New Zealand and Australia, where its wool must offer protection from extreme temperatures; insulating in winter yet cool and breathable at the height of an outback summer. Merino sheep must be shorn annually as their wool does not stop growing; ensuring the wool we use is sustainable and cruelty free. With its anti-bacterial properties, our Merino wool is crafted into base layer garments that provide exceptional warmth in cooler months, whilst being super soft, lightweight and breathable for warmer climes.

Sanders

Moleskin

A heavyweight, luxuriously soft and smooth fabric, often people are surprised to hear that moleskin is in fact woven from cotton; its name derived from the suede-like feel of mole down. The dense weave of moleskin offers incredible wind protection, whilst the durability of the fabric ensures longevity of your moleskin garment. The cotton is raised in a similar style as velvet and corduroy, with the addition of 2% elastane to allow the fabric to stretch, offering further comfort to the garment.

Sanders

Monogramming

Our Monogramming and embroidery service is available across a range of garments, offering you the chance to personalise your Private White V.C. piece with your initials, or as a unique and personal gift for that special someone. Get in touch today to find out more about our Made to Measure and Monogramming services.

Qualities - Raglan sleeve

Raglan Sleeve

The raglan sleeve extends right up to the collar, leaving a diagonal seam which gives the garment anundefined, relaxed look. Originally designed during WWI for shooting jackets, the raglan sleeve offers an extended range of movement for the arm than that of a standard sleeve.

Qualities - Real Horn Buttons

Real Horn Buttons

Ever a mark of quality, real horn buttons have been used as standard on Savile Row and in quality tailors across the world. We utilise real horn buttons across our garments, adding that finishing quality detail and authenticity.

Sanders

Ripstop Ventile®

Stylish, sleek and surprisingly strong, Ripstop strengthened fabric has a history to rival that of our namesake. Ripstop is the process of weaving tough threads into a base fabric in a cross-weave pattern; creating a grid-like structure of strengthened fabric. The squares within the pattern act as a barrier, reinforcing the base fabric by not allowing rips to travel through it; quite literally rip-stop. We have added the Ripstop technique to an array of styles, most notably to our Ventile® Mac 2.0 and Harrington 2.0, combining waterproofing Ventile®, wind proof copper sealing and reinforced Ripstop properties, crafting some of our most durable and hard-wearing products.

Qualities - RIRI Copper hardware

RIRI copper hardware

RIRI of Switzerland pride themselves in using world-class technology with glamorous yet refined taste, meeting in products that are designed to be unique. Their zips are of the highest quality available, waxed to ensure they do not jam in a way cheaper zippers can. All their hardware is hand polished to perfection at the end of the process, which is why we utilise only the finest Military Grade hardware from RIRI of Switzerland in our garments, in our signature copper colourway.

Sanders

Shearling

Shearling or Sheepskin is a subcategory of leather; obtained from a recently sheared sheep or a lamb. The double-sided fabric comprises of ultra-soft suede and clipped fur, offering flexible and breathable qualities and adding a luxurious touch to a garment. Our shearling is ethically sourced, entirely traceable and cruelty free, sourced solely as a by-product.

Sanders

If you are confident in your leg length, you are more than welcome to specify in your order and we will have our skilled craftsmen and women tailor to the correct length at no charge. Alternatively, some customers prefer to take the trousers unfinished to be finished at their own tailors. Whatever your preference, you can be assured you will find your perfect fit in our trouser range.

Sanders

Venetian wool

Venetian wool replicates a double-faced fabric due to the double weight of the weave. It is spun beautifully and finely, producing a high shine finish.

Sanders

Ventile

Originally developed during WWI in our very own city of Manchester, Ventile® is a densely woven cotton celebrated for its exceptional weather and showerproofing properties. Crafted from a yarn that swells when wet, the fabric was initially researched at the Shirley Institute, commissioned by Winston Churchill in a bid to create a woven fabric with waterproofing technologies. Today, Ventile® is a household name, used to create classic outwear silhouettes with durable, innovative properties.

Waxed Cotton

Originating from the English sailing industry in the mid-19th century, wax cotton is as its name suggests; cotton that has been treated with a paraffin or beeswax to create a showerproof and durable finish. A delight for many is the resulting character waxed cotton achieves through wear over time, resulting in a truly unique garment to its wearer. As wax cotton can be re-waxed over and over again, it ensures the showerproofing properties are never lost, compared to those created by chemicals which may fade over time.
